The Blackmere uses laser engraving on tantalum at 6mm width, which is about as narrow as you want to go with detailed pattern work. Any thinner and the ornamental design starts looking too cramped to appreciate. Here the geometric pattern has enough space to show without overwhelming the ring.

Laser engraving on tantalum creates permanent marking that won't wear off like surface coatings. The pattern gets etched into the metal itself, so it's there for good. This works for people who want decorative elements but prefer engraved details over inlays or coatings. More permanent than applied finishes, though the pattern might look dated in twenty years. Depends how traditional or trendy the design turns out to be long-term.
